The second brightest star in the constellation, located at the hunters “right shoulder” as he faces the observer, is Betelgeuse (pronounced Bet-el-jews, not Beetle-juice), from Arabic (bat al-jawzāʾ), which means “the giant's shoulder.” Betelgeuse is a massive M1-type red supergiant semi-regular variable star nearing the end of its life.

Federal energy officials denied permits for a controversial hydropower project on The Navajo Nation in northern Arizona. In its decision to deny those permits, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) said it was establishing a new policy about cooperation with tribes.

Arno Penzias died on Jan. 22. He was born in Munich, Germany, April 26, 1933. At the age of six, he and his brother were among the Jewish children evacuated to Great Britain as part of the Kinder Transport rescue operation. Later, his parents fled Nazi Germany for the United States, and in 1946 Penzias became a naturalized U.S. citizen.
